Season 5 of “The Witcher” brings the live-action fantasy series to a close. But will it be a worthy one? In order to boost viewing figures at the end, Netflix is now returning to some characters that fans particularly love.
The fifth season of “The Witcher” brings the once-hyped Netflix series to its final conclusion. The fantasy epic is part of a much larger franchise, based on the books by Andrezej Sapkowski and the multi-award-winning video game series. In 2019, Netflix heeded fans’ wishes and finally streamed the fantasy drama.
What began as a fabulous success steadily lost its relevance in the following years. 76 million households watched the first season in the first four weeks, while the sequel was streamed by just 18 million viewers in the week following its release. However, season 3 (15 million) and season 4 (7 million) fell even shorter in terms of numbers and expectations. With season 5 in the pipeline, the question arises: How does Netflix plan to save the series? The answer? By bringing back a fan favorite.
“The Witcher” Season 5 Sees a Happy Reunion
One reason for the sharp drop in viewing figures may have been the departure of Henry Cavill. Until season 4, he played one of the main characters, the Witcher known as Geralt of Rivia. Cavill, best known for his role as Superman, was a big fan of the original book and therefore translated his passion into the role. However, as the role became increasingly distant, tensions rose. Cavill left the set and Liam Hemsworth replaced him for the current season. Among other things, this caused an uproar among fans and a decline in viewer interest.
Other fan favorites such as Anya Chalotra (Yennefer) and Freya Allan (Ciri) continue to fly the flag. However, their appearances alone were unlikely to be enough to turn the tide. To save the final season, Netflix will use characters who last appeared in the series five years ago. In season 5, viewers can expect a reunion with the Witchers Lambert (Paul Bullion), Coën (Zates Atour), and Jarre (Joseph Payne), among others.
Netflix Plays It Close to the Chest
While Netflix already confirmed the return of Zates Atour as Coën, the other two cast reunions are still rumored. However, the reunion with Jarre is particularly surprising. He appeared in just a single episode in the second season in 2021 — and is set to reappear? Yarpen Zigirin (Jeremy Crawford) and Zoltan Chivay (Danny Woodburn) could also return for the season finale.

According to information from Redanian Intelligence, Shani, a fan favorite from “The Witcher 3: Hearts of Stone”, is likely to appear in the finale for the first time. Emily-Jo Young (“Sexy Beast”, 2024) has been cast in the film. Anyone familiar with Sapkowski’s original book should be able to make the connection: Will season 5 focus on the Battle of Brenna? Nothing has been confirmed, but the signs are pointing in the right direction. A date for the finale’s debut is also unknown, but it is set to be released by Netflix in 2026.
It’s time for Geralt of Riva’s last dance. Are you still hyped for the grand finale, or have you already written off the series after the last few seasons?
