KPop Demon Hunters 2: What’s Next?
The time has finally come. Fans of ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ have been waiting for this: The sequel has been officially announced. The rumors are true and all hopes have been confirmed. But this is just the beginning, as director Maggie Kang anteased. Is there more to come than just a sequel?
Since Thursday (March 12), the most successful Netflix film of all time is set to continue. “KPop Demon Hunters is officially entering its sequel era”, announced the streaming giant. And director Maggie Kang announced right after that this was “just the beginning”. Will there be more than just a second part? Here’s what we know so far about the sequel.
“KPop Demon Hunters 2” is Coming
“KPop Demon Hunters” was and still is a real goldmine for Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation. Since June 2025, the animated film has been streamed over 500 million times on Netflix. At the 2026 Oscars, it won both “Best Animated Film” and “Best Original Song” (“Golden”). It was also the first K-pop song to win a Grammy and reach number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts.
No wonder Netflix wants to hold on to this crowd-puller. Hence, the streaming service and Sony Pictures Animation have signed a multi-year contract with directors Kang and Chris Appelhaus. They are now to start work on a script for the sequel. Part 2 is actually only supposed to be the first project.
Prequel, Sequel, or Spin-Off?
Both the directors and Netflix openly hinted in interviews that it might not just be limited to a second part. “The world we’ve created has so much more to offer, and I’m looking forward to showing it to you. This is just the beginning,” Kang hinted. Netflix Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria even spoke of an entire K-pop Demon Hunter “universe”. This means that virtually anything is possible: further sequels or even prequels and spin-offs.

In “KPop Demon Hunters”, we follow the K-pop group HUNTR/X, consisting of best friends Rumi, Mira, and Zoey. However, they are not only successful musicians, but also demon hunters — in secret, of course. They want to protect their fans from the power of demon king Gwi-Ma and do so by fighting against their rivals, the Saja Boys. However, this all-male K-pop troupe is made up of demons who merely disguise themselves as humans to capture the souls of their fans.

However, nothing is known about the content of the upcoming part of the franchise yet. Director Kang hinted that there are still unanswered questions from the first film that need clarification. However, it remains unclear whether she is alluding to Rumi’s origins and her mother’s story or, rather, the lives of Mira and Zoey before HUNTR/X. Industry experts also predict that a release is not expected before 2029. Fans will have to be patient for quite a while yet.
